Death of a salesman bbc5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() Loman is played by “The Wire” and “Treme” star Wendell Pierce and he says the role isn’t validation for Black actors - they’re all over Broadway. It’s a first for the Broadway show and marks a notable difference in the play’s interpretation. Now a new production has recently opened on Broadway with one difference: Willy Loman, his sons, and his wife, Linda, are all played by Black actors. When those sales slipped, so did Loman’s grip. The play followed Willy Loman, a man whose self-esteem revolved around his success as a salesman in the 1930s. When playwright Arther Miller released “ Death of a Salesman” in 1949, the play received Tony Awards, a Pulitzer Prize and brought grown men to their knees. Author Meg Howrey was inspired to write The Wanderers by the Mars-500 mission, in which an international crew of six participated in a 520-day simulation of a flight to Mars. We have lots of events coming up in January that explore themes from the book, and we encourage everyone to join us for a presentation and book signing by the author on Saturday, February 2, in the main library's auditorium. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Tuesdays at the Castle. With the help of the castle (and sometimes the maids) the royal children must fight the evil prince from a neighboring country and the Royal Council who are trying to force Rolf into relinquishing the right to rule. Prince Rolf, Princess Delilah, and Princess Cecilia fight to keep the castle in the family once their father, mother and oldest brother are attacked on the road and are presumed dead. Tuesdays at the Castle will appeal to girls and boys- girls because the main character is the youngest princess in a royal family, and boys because Rolf, the second oldest son and the castle’s choice for heir to the throne, must take over and rule the kingdom in the absence of his father. I have yet to read another author with Jessica’s particular talent in fairytale storytelling. A magical castle that changes every Tuesday (or more often if it feels like it) and an 11-year-old princess that can communicate with it? What a fun idea. ![]() I have been anxiously awaiting Tuesdays at the Castle since Jessica first told us what she was working on back in March 2010. ![]() A House of Many Mansions by Kamal Salibi5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() It is only when the Arabs succeed in ridding themselves of the highly idealized Arab nationalist vision of their past that they will be able to live together in the modern Arab world.
