The wanderers book meg howrey5/22/2023 The Wanderers is as much about family and relationships as it is about space exploration, which makes for an unusual story. Meg Howrey’s The Wanderers is possessed of the right kind of ambiguity it’s a novel that is part sci-fi adventure and part interpersonal drama, told from multiple perspectives in a well-woven narrative tapestry that embraces its influences even as it defies being defined by them. Howrey's visit to Beaverton, we asked her a few questions to get to know more about her and her approach to writing a novel about the life of astronauts training for the first mission to Mars. She immersed herself in research for the book, attending a writer's crash course on space called Launchpad and spending time in a sensory deprivation tank to learn about microgravity and true darkness. Author Meg Howrey was inspired to write The Wanderers by the Mars-500 mission, in which an international crew of six participated in a 520-day simulation of a flight to Mars. We have lots of events coming up in January that explore themes from the book, and we encourage everyone to join us for a presentation and book signing by the author on Saturday, February 2, in the main library's auditorium. Beaverton City Library kicked off its first annual One Book, One Beaverton community-wide read event in early November by giving away free copies of the novel The Wanderers by Meg Howrey.
